Soprano Izabela Matula was born in Poland. She graduated in voice and acting from the Kraków Academy of Music. She also studied music theory, composition and conducting. In the 2022/2023 season she made her debut in Bayerische Staatsoper München as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly. She also debuted in Innsbruck and the British Grange Park Opera in Surrey in the title role of Tosca.

She participated in numerous vocal courses and masterclasses. After graduating, she continued her vocal training with Neil Semer (New York) and is currently honing her vocal skills under the tutelage of Dariusz Grabowski.
She has taken part in many international singing competitions such as Deutsches Lied Wettbewerb-Sommerakademie Prague-Budapest – Wien (1st prize), Ada Sari International Vocal Competition (2nd prize), OperSchlossLaubach in Laubach (1st prize) and Wilhelm Stenhammar International Singing Competition (3rd prize). She also represented Poland in the BBC Singer of the World in 2009, reaching the semi-finals.

Her extensive stage repertoire includes leading soprano roles in Italian operas such as Aida, Il Trovatore (Mannheim, Linz), La forza del destino (Oper Frankfurt 2022, Warsaw 2023), Luisa Miller, Otello, Stiffelio, Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, Madama Butterfly (Mannheim), Suor Angelica, Tosca (Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf and many others), Liu in Turandot and Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme (ABAO Bilbao), the title role of Catalani’s La Wally (Theater an der Wien 2021, also registered on DVD) as well as Mozart roles such as the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. She also specialises in German and Slavic repertoire, including Wagner’s Lohengrin, Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa and Eugene Onegin (Linz), Janacek’s Katia Kabanova, Smetana’s Dalibor (Frankfurt) and Weinberger’s Švanda Dudak (Teatro Massimo Palermo). Her repertoire also includes parts in operas such as Paul Hindemith’s Cardillac, Henryk Jarecki’s Barbara Radziwiłłówna, Menotti’s Consul, Strauss’s Salome, Britten’s Peter Grimes and Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann.
In addition to opera parts, she often performs in oratorio repertoire such as Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation of the World, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater and most of the soprano parts in works by Krzysztof Penderecki. As a guest soloist, she has performed in many concert halls around the world, including the Simón Bolívar Concert Hall in Caracas, the Berliner Konzerthaus, the Doha Concert Hall, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Darmstadt Koncerthaus, the Musikverein Graz and the National Philharmonic in Warsaw.
